North Dakota Mensa

Mensans having fun at Denny’s in Bismarck
North Dakota Mensa was founded in 1982. It received the Innovative Owl Award for membership retention in 2000 and the Prolific Owl Award for membership growth in 2001, and first Honorable Mention for the Prolific Owl in 2005 and 2006. Member Karina Fabian received the Fiction Owl in 2007 for her ongoing contribution to the newsletter. The Owl is national Mensa’s highest award to a local group.
In 2009 North Dakota Mensa or its members received four major national awards, including Group of the Year. We are looking forward to 2010!
North Dakota Mensa has hosted
six successful Regional Gatherings at The President’s House, Valley City State
University, and is planning its seventh for 2010. Click here
to read about RG 2009 and here
for info about the upcoming RG on June 11-13, 2010. Among other attractions, RG
’10 will include a murder mystery, musical evening with the President’s House
antique player piano, a potluck dinner, and fireworks! Members will have the option
of taking a tour to Gary Olson’s dinosaur digs immediately after the RG.
The group has regular
meetings in Fargo/Moorhead, Dickinson, and Grand Forks and occasional meetings
in Valley City, Bismarck, and other cities.
Members also communicate
through the group’s newsletter, the Prairie Dawg. The Dawg has included
discussions about fighting terrorism, mock turtle soup, referenda, fairies,
cats, Mensa gatherings, and Death Rain potato chips. Recent issues included the
Owl-award winning serial set at the 2006 World Gathering, written especially
for us by Karina Fabian and starring Vern the dragon, also know as Dragon Eye, P.I. The series has
been published in book form by Swimming Kangaroo Press, and you can read the
original version here.
North Dakota Mensa participates
in the national Scholarship Program. For more information, see the contact page
